Fall Camping

This weekend I went camping for the first time in quite a while. Normally I would have gone a few times in the spring and summer, but Toshiro was to young in the spring and recovering from his neuter in the summer so this was the first real chance for me to go this year. I went to someplace that I hadn't gone before, but I should have. For three years I have lived lived within 15 minutes of this camping spot and hadn't visited it yet. I know better now because it was a great camping spot. I think in the summer it is a little more party oriented, since it has a lake and lots of people get rowdy and drunk there (despite alcohol being prohibited in state parks) which is why I avoided it, but it looks like in the spring and fall when its to cold for wake boarding and the like it is a nice quiet place with BIG campsites.

View of other campsites across the lake at night. I love how people bring different colored lights to decorate their area.

It was in the 84 F the night my group got to the campground. Overnight it was stormy and windy as all heck and in the morning the temperature was in the low 50s F. It was cold like that until noon when it finally started to warm up a few degrees at a time.

You may know from some of my other postings that I have a thing about tree's. I really like them and think they are great. Pine tree's not as much, but it was still sad to see that most of the various pine tree's in the park were dying from pine borers.

Though these tree's which are normally are kind of creepy and shaggy (in my opinion) become quite vibrant and beautiful as their bark sheds away. Sad though as the park will loose much of its wind protection as they go.

It kind of reminds me of the scene from the BBC's early rendition of The Chronicles of Narnia: Voyage of the Dawn Treader when Eustice becomes a dragon and has to tear off his own scales to become human again.

Here it actually looks like pieces of vellum are falling away. The paper kind used for tracing.. not the animal kind.

Here you can directly see the borers handy work. It looks a bit like the tree is made out of Butterfinger filling.

Ok, enough about dying pine trees. How about a nice campfire.

Toasty!

Oh! And before I forget, they had these tiny little oaks at the campground that had the BIGGEST ACORNS EVER.

Seriously.. look at the size of this thing.

I thought I might be able to attract Totoro and grow me some Totoro sized Trees. :)

Though I don't think my aparment complex would be very happy about it if I did...
