Amazon claims to be forwarding information regarding Rooster Teeth to their legal team.
“The idea is actually from a Japanese game show called Documental, which is an Amazon Original Series started in 2016. We are expanding this format to Mexico and Australia and hopefully in the future to more countries. Thank you for flagging this to us. We will forward this to our legal team. Thank you!”
On April 27, 2020 Rooster Teeth’s Funhaus uploaded a video titled “Last Laugh Episode 1 – New Series Sneak Peek!”
Around two weeks later, Amazon’s channel “Amazon Prime Video AUNZ” uploaded a video titled “Last One Laughing Australia | Red Band Official Trailer | Amazon Originals”.
The potential issue here seems to be the format, the two shows may be too closely identical.
RoosterTeeth video description;
Host Geoff Ramsey gathers 12 of Rooster Teeth’s funniest for the biggest laugh challenge ever; stay locked in a room for six hours, without breaking a smile. Armed with three lives, cast from Funhaus, Achievement Hunter, and RT Core do whatever it takes to stay in the game. Check out the show here: https://bit.ly/2Y1x0O7
Amazon video description;
Season 1 of Last One Laughing Australia will be hosted by Australian international star and comedian, Rebel Wilson. Ten professional comedians will be locked together in a house challenged with the task of making all of the other comedians laugh while keeping a straight face themselves. The last one to laugh is the winner, taking home the title of “LAST ONE LAUGHING”, along with the comedic street cred and a $100,000 cash prize.
If Amazon does pursue legal action against Rooster Teeth, the most likely scenario seems to be starting with a Cease and Desist, perhaps. Of course, even “just” ceasing production on a new show would still be a costly hit for Rooster Teeth if it came to that. Let alone potential further legal action from both companies.
That’s just speculation, at the moment, we don’t know if this will go anywhere.
We’ll do our best to update you if the situation proliferates.
